Brent Coates of Interlachen takes the reins as District Governor for the 2017-2018 Rotary year. A veteran lawman from the Rotary Club of Palatka Sunrise becomes the 106 governor of the district. Here are some things you may not know about him.
Brent was inducted as a member of the Rotary Club of Palatka Sunrise in May of 1998, serving as Club President, Treasurer, Sergeant of Arms and Board Director for several years. He has served at the District level as an Assistant Governor under Past District Governor Cecil Gibson, as a three tier Assistant Governor under Past District Governor Art McQueen and as the District Sergeant of Arms. Brent married his high school sweetheart Kendra in 1983; they have a son Justin who works in the HVAC business and a daughter who is a Chief Radiation Therapist/Clinical Dosimetrist and a son-in-law who works in contractor sales. They have the World’s most beautiful granddaughter Nola Kay and three grand dogs Prince Charming, Lucy and Sarge. Both Brent and Kendra are Paul Harris Fellows.
Brent’s professional career includes twenty-eight years of service with the Florida Highway Patrol with duty assignments in Miami, Ft. Pierce, Stuart, Tallahassee, Miami, Palatka, Orlando, Bradenton and Tallahassee. He served as a Traffic Homicide Investigator & District Sergeant in the Ft. Pierce District, as a Training Lieutenant at the FHP Training Academy, as a Captain, District Commander in both Miami and Palatka, as a Major, Troop Commander for the Troop K – Florida Turnpike Enterprise, as a Major, Troop Commander for the Troop F ten southwestern Florida Counties and ...
as a Major, Chief of Training – Academy Director for the FHP Training Academy. Upon his retirement he was given an honorary promotion to Lt. Colonel. He has a Bachelor Degree from Barry University in Miami, Florida and he is a Certified Public Manager (CPM) from Florida State University and the Florida Center for Public Management. He has over 3,000 hours of classroom in law enforcement criminal justice training and received twenty-four letters of commendation and forty letters of appreciation during his career. He served as a contracted Adjunct Faculty Instructor for the University of North Florida’s Institute of Police Technology and Management instructing municipal, county, state, federal and military law enforcement officers at various locations across the Nation to include Scofield Barracks Hawaii, Fairbanks Alaska, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Louisiana State Police and many other locations.
Brent is active in the Palatka Community having served as Past President and Board Member of the United Way of Putnam County, Board of Trustees for the Putnam Community Medical Center, Board of Directors for the Lee Conlee House, President of the Putnam Republican Club, member of the Republican Executive Committee, founding Chairman of the Putnam County Community Traffic Safety Team and served as the Vice Chairman and Commissioner for Timucua District North Florida Council Boy Scouts of America,
