Brent's District Bulletin

WEEK 16 - OCTOBER 16

The District Governors from Zone 33 & 34 meet with Rotary International President Elect (RIPE) Barry Rassin, Rotary International Director (RID) Ron Ferrell and several current and past District Governors from the Caribbean Region.  There were no governors or representatives from Puerto Rico able to attend.

RIPE Barry told us Puerto Rico plus (8) other island countries were devastated from Hurricane Irma and Maria with several taking the brunt of both hurricanes.  He said there are some parts of P.R. where it will take close to a year before electrical power can be restored.  Several of the island countries were totally wiped out and probably would not be rebuilt.  He said the recovery process will take several years.

Rassin told us Rotary International was going to establish a link on Rotary.org web page directing Rotarians for disaster relief areas.  He said there were 14 areas globally currently recovering from disasters. He stated WPS Disaster Management is contracted by FEMA and has expressed an interest in contracting with Rotary for future disasters.  He is going to meet with them in the next few weeks to determine if it is a viable partnership. He did tell us “Shelter Box” will not send any Shelter Boxes to Puerto Rico after a request from Rotary International stating “they (Shelter Box) make their determination where to send the boxes.”  Those Rotary Districts and Rotarians who specifically requested their donations for the boxes be sent to P. R. should request their donations back.

South Jax Rotarians and Interactors Join Forces in Rising Against Hunger

Rise HungerIn the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey,Irma, Maria, and other worldwide disasters The Rotary Club of South Jacksonville in conjunction with The Interact Clubs of Bishop Kenny and Nease High School packaged over 16,800 meals for the Rise Against Hunger Organization. Working together these clubs surpassed their goal and raised over $6,500 to support the organizations’ many projects. The highly nutritious dehydrated meals consist of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief 501(C)(3) non-profit organization devoted to meeting the United Nations goal of ending hunger around the world by 2030.

The Oct 7 event held at Bishop Kenny High School was a day of fun, fellowship and teamwork as more than 85 dynamic Rotarians and volunteers packaged up in assembly- line fashion ready-to-ship meals that will be sent to those in need. It was a very special day as members of Rotary and Interact from all over Jacksonville came together to help with this crucial Disaster Relief and Recovery Program.

Special “Thanks” go out to the many involved who made this important event a success. South Jacksonville Rotary Club President Dan Robie, District Governor Brent Coates , D6970 Disaster Committee Chairs Pat Mulvihill, along with Doug Brown and Mike Selah for coordinating and connecting with Youth-Team leaders. Also and most importantly to the many Rotarians and volunteers that came out on a beautiful college football Saturday to roll up their sleeves, turn on the music and “get packing!”
